Although Ripoff Report claims to not host advertising, it does indeed sell its own “reports” which claim to help consumers fight fraud, and does utilize pop-up advertising. The validity of their claims is not their job to prove. However, Ripoff Report’s claim is that it simply providing a “freedom of speech” opportunity for consumers to air their grievances. Because all complaints can be posted by anonymous posters, the validity of complaints may be questionable, indeed libelous. One of the key features of Ripoff Report is that once a complaint has been listed, it is not removed, regardless of the outcome of the complaint. Over 410,000 consumer complaints have been logged by the company and continue to be posted. From complaints against landlords and small companies, to large-scale claims of retail injustice, Ripoff Report is a very popular site, ranked 568 on the web. With the tagline, “By Consumers, For Consumers,” Ripoff Report is a clearinghouse for consumer complaints.
